Humanity Squaring Nature

This show begins to weave together many years of personal experience in art, psychology, and astrology. The terms "squaring" and "opposing" in the show title are astrological terms that refer to notoriously difficult encounters between two forces that ultimately transform both. Change does not happen in a vacuum. It happens only under pressure and the square and the opposition are astrological symbols for perhaps the greatest of these pressures as they occur in the human experience. An astrological square is an offensive event wherein an aggressor moves in relation to a perceived opponent. "Humanity squaring nature" refers to the offensive, aggressive actions of humans toward the natural world. An astrological opposition is a defensive response of resistance to the offensive event of a square. "Nature opposing the linear mind" refers to nature's resistance to the assault upon it by humans. The thesis of this show is that the rigidity of the linear mind is fracturing the natural world, as symbolized by the cubed images of nature, and that it will be forced to bend in the face of nature's opposition symbolized by the curved lines of urban imagery. The imagery in this show is part of a fledgling attempt to begin to symbolize perhaps the single most important and controversial idea in metapsychology today, the idea that the rational mind is at irreconcilable odds with the human spirit and the larger reality which it mistakenly perceives as separate from itself. The global ecological crisis is a manifestation of this intrapsychic conflict.
